The mapping crowd-sourcing program, known as The National Map Corps (TNMCorps), encourages citizens to collect structures data by adding new features, removing obsolete points, and correcting existing data for The National Map, which includes the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and the US Topo map series. Of the structure types available to edit, cemeteries may be of particular interest to genealogists. As one of the cornerstones of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Program, The National Map is a collaborative effort among the USGS and other Federal, State, and local partners to improve and deliver topographic information for the Nation. As of April 2017 over 2,000 volunteers have made over 352,000 edits to more than 257,000 unique points.

Genealogy hit for the day.
I got an email ad for books from a national publisher which included a listing for "Sketches of Western North Carolina Illustrating Principally the Revolutionary Period of Mecklenburg, Rowan, Lincoln and Adjoining Counties" and thought maybe I can get it ILL.
Well for goodness sake it is part of The Project Gutenberg eBook collection and you can download it for FREE.
Now it probably isn't as pretty as the print version which will have an index, but hey, it's string searchable.
Color me happy; sorry GPC. [also posted on FB]

One of those wonderful 'ah ha' research days.
County history book listed on ebay [Van Zandt] showed up in the Familysearch.org catalog.
I go to the item in familysearch and it can only be viewed in a Family History center.
Go to the center and there are TWO volumes I can download as PDFS.
Two new 'free and string searchable' reference books for my library!

I had an interesting research/commercial lesson yesterday. . I found a book I wanted to read on Worldcat which I then ordered through ILL. Since it was published ca 1907 [dates differ] I went to see if it was on Googlebooks to download. Google said it was available in a Kindle version for 99 cents. So I decided to buy the Kindle version. In the process of buying the book I saw that the Internet Archive was mentioned in connection with the book. I then went to Internet Archive and saw that the book was available there as a download, also.
Now the takeaway of this: The book on Kindle is images. You cannot do a string search on the Kindle images.
On Internet Archive you can download the book as a text file. You can do a string search on the downloaded text file.
Getting the book on Internet Archive was much more rewarding.
