American Settlements and Migrations: A Primer for Genealogists and Family Historians by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck

A lot of the good things to say about this book revolve around how well the author, Lloyd Bockstruck, knew the area and its history. Known areas contain references for other works to supplement a reader's search. Other states have few notations and may just complement what the reader already knew.
Graphically and grammatically, there are a lot of problems with odd words,  incomplete sentences and sentence justification.
As far as finding what you're looking for, some facts are repeated in multiple states sometimes showing up within a page. It would have been thoughtful to include an index despite the amount of space that it would have involved. The extra sources listed could be included as footnotes which would also make reading the text less complicated.

Richmond county, Virginia unincorporated communities.

I'm working on written marriage consents for Richmond County, Va that were in a file [Stored offsite] at the Virginia State Archives. Each one has to be transcribed and prompts new searches and questions.
The one currently being transcribed lists the post master of Ivondale in the county. I went looking for Ivondate and in Wiki found this list of communities.

My opionion on the 19 Volume series Men in Gray Interments by Thomas Spratt

I'm currently in Richmond, VA and am spending time at the Virginia State Library and Archives.
I had occasion to use a series of books by Thomas Spratt entitled Men in Gray Interments
The table of contents in the first book in the series started with a cemetery list with no location given: did not include the name of the county or independent city in Virginia as part of the name. The next section of the book was the list of tombstone records individually and counties were named here. This was followed [usually] by a bibliography, and index. Volumes 18 & 19 had counties listed beside each cemetery name in the table of contents. Best bet, start at the back of volume 16, which has a list of all the previous volumes and lists their cemeteries with their county location. Index in each volume is surname only.

A Contemporary Family Research Study.

I abstract information out of the Northern Neck News, a Warsaw, Virginia publication in my search for cousins.
There was an article in the Sharps section of the February 8, 2007 issue which listed 3 sisters. They were Judy, wife of Al Newman; Betsy, wife of Chip Quick; and Barbara, wife of Sam Moore.
Now there are a lot of transient people in this area Virginia who come and visit relatives and friends who live there. I was not sure if the 3 sisters had other relatives in the area, I didn't know their last name.
I used a people finder called Pipl.com and found a Judi C Newman in Sharps. ‘Creery’ was among her associated names.
Then using Newslibrary.com I found the story of the same Judi Newman selling a business in South Hill, Virginia.
With the new information I started looking for combinations of the names of the 3 sisters in the same database and found the girl's mother. The girl’s mother’s obituary gave me their fathers name so I now had their maiden name.

The data that I found is listed below with the documentation. Especially interesting to me are the variations of the names which were causing me so much trouble.

1 Sister: Judith  Connelly w/o Alfred Haskins Newman, Jr also wife of male Creery
SOUTH HILL - After 33 years in the retail business, the last five of which was owning and operating Southern Belle in South Hill, Judi Newman passed the torch to new owner Sheila Dunn on Dec. 30.
