Genealogy hit for the day.
I got an email ad for books from a national publisher which included a listing for "Sketches of Western North Carolina Illustrating Principally the Revolutionary Period of Mecklenburg, Rowan, Lincoln and Adjoining Counties" and thought maybe I can get it ILL.
Well for goodness sake it is part of The Project Gutenberg eBook collection and you can download it for FREE.
Now it probably isn't as pretty as the print version which will have an index, but hey, it's string searchable.
Color me happy; sorry GPC. [also posted on FB]

One of those wonderful 'ah ha' research days.
County history book listed on ebay [Van Zandt] showed up in the Familysearch.org catalog.
I go to the item in familysearch and it can only be viewed in a Family History center.
Go to the center and there are TWO volumes I can download as PDFS.
Two new 'free and string searchable' reference books for my library!
