American Settlements and Migrations: A Primer for Genealogists and Family Historians by Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck

A lot of the good things to say about this book revolve around how well the author, Lloyd Bockstruck, knew the area and its history. Known areas contain references for other works to supplement a reader's search. Other states have few notations and may just complement what the reader already knew.
Graphically and grammatically, there are a lot of problems with odd words,  incomplete sentences and sentence justification.
As far as finding what you're looking for, some facts are repeated in multiple states sometimes showing up within a page. It would have been thoughtful to include an index despite the amount of space that it would have involved. The extra sources listed could be included as footnotes which would also make reading the text less complicated.

I'm working on written marriage consents for Richmond County, Va that were in a file [Stored offsite] at the Virginia State Archives. Each one has to be transcribed and prompts new searches and questions.

My opionion on the 19 Volume series Men in Gray Interments by Thomas Spratt

I'm currently in Richmond, VA and am spending time at the Virginia State Library and Archives.
I had occasion to use a series of books by Thomas Spratt entitled Men in Gray Interments
The table of contents in the first book in the series started with a cemetery list with no location given: did not include the name of the county or independent city in Virginia as part of the name. The next section of the book was the list of tombstone records individually and counties were named here. This was followed [usually] by a bibliography, and index. Volumes 18 & 19 had counties listed beside each cemetery name in the table of contents. Best bet, start at the back of volume 16, which has a list of all the previous volumes and lists their cemeteries with their county location. Index in each volume is surname only.

A Contemporary Family Research Study.

I abstract information out of the Northern Neck News, a Warsaw, Virginia publication in my search for cousins.
There was an article in the Sharps section of the February 8, 2007 issue which listed 3 sisters. They were Judy, wife of Al Newman; Betsy, wife of Chip Quick; and Barbara, wife of Sam Moore.
Now there are a lot of transient people in this area Virginia who come and visit relatives and friends who live there. I was not sure if the 3 sisters had other relatives in the area, I didn't know their last name.
I used a people finder called Pipl.com and found a Judi C Newman in Sharps. ‘Creery’ was among her associated names.
Then using Newslibrary.com I found the story of the same Judi Newman selling a business in South Hill, Virginia.
With the new information I started looking for combinations of the names of the 3 sisters in the same database and found the girl's mother. The girl’s mother’s obituary gave me their fathers name so I now had their maiden name.

The data that I found is listed below with the documentation. Especially interesting to me are the variations of the names which were causing me so much trouble.

1 Sister: Judith  Connelly w/o Alfred Haskins Newman, Jr also wife of male Creery
SOUTH HILL - After 33 years in the retail business, the last five of which was owning and operating Southern Belle in South Hill, Judi Newman passed the torch to new owner Sheila Dunn on Dec. 30.
For Newman, the selling of the business offers an opportunity to spend more time with her husband, who now works for O'Malley Timber Company in Tappahannock.[South Hill Enterprise (VA) January 11, 2005 Section: News "Southern Belle changes ownership" Author: Charlie Wilson]

One of the 'found' references during my recent week at the Georgia Genealogical Society IGHR offering for Law Libraries and Government Documents is the The Sourcebook: Public Record information

The Comprehensive Guide to County, State, and Federal Public Record Sources

Everybody doing research should have a copy

NSDAR book specific to members in North Carolina.

One of several new books in my collection. I was amazed that I had to fill in information about pages numbers on the table of contents.

Marriage Records for Washington County, Maryland

PDF images of marriage records from 1886-1970 for Washington County, Maryland have recently been added to the Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, Maryland. However, indexes to the names in the marriage records are available only from 1861 to 1919 and also from 1927 to 1949. The records were compiled, indexed, and edited by Marsha L. Fuller, Certified Genealogist and now are available to everyone online free of charge.
You can access the Washington County, Maryland Marriage Records by starting at https://www.washcolibrary.org/?q=marriage-records-pdfs.

Public record information-elegant. Look for it in your local law library.

One of my 'finds' during my recent IGHR Law Libraries adventure courtesy of the Georgia Genealogical Society is The Sourcebook to Public Record Information: The Comprehensive Guide to County, State, and Federal Public Record Sources 8th Edition  by Sankey. At over 1800 pages, it is a contemporary reference that no other genealogy related book I've run across can match.  I got my copy for less than $9 and that included postage. I saw a used copy today for $1.99

Who has that book?

I was reading an old blog post that suggested looking at Librarything.com when you are looking for a specific book that you don't have or can't find a copy of it to check out.
I just tried it today for the Genealogy of Thomas Davis (1782-1846) and His Descendants.
There is a copy of the book at The Clallam Genealogical Society in Washington State. I've just sent them an email to see if they can help me out.
So may odd books, so many other people who may have them.
Try it out!

I am sharing my 'favorite' Traveler.

Laura Sellman was a teacher and a risk taker. Her permanent home was in Carroll County, Maryland, but she set up, with a friend, one of the first 'AirB&B's' in the 1890's in Chicago for the World's Fair.

"Mrs Laura S Sellman, of the vicinity of Warfieldsburg, and her son Willie are visiting Mrs Sellman's sister, Mrs E C Coxwell, De Soto, Mo. They expect to return home in July, and on the return trip will stop awhile to visit Mrs Sellman's brothers, Messrs J Wesley and Ezra J Pool, at Pullman, Ills. Mrs S writes to order the Sentinel for her sister, Mrs Coxwell.
The American Sentinel Saturday, June 14, 1890.

"Mrs Laura S Sellman and Miss M T Hartsook, of Warfieldsburg, are settled in their new home at 7050, Oglesby avenue,Brookdale, adjacent to Chicago and within walking distance of the south entrance to the World's Fair grounds, where they are ready to provide lodgings for their eastern friends at $1.25 per day.  They attended the opening of the exposition on the
1st inst, and are sure it surpasses anything of the kind heretofore attempted. The American Sentinel Saturday, May 13, 1893

"Among those who registered during the month of July, at the lodging house kept by Mrs L S Sellman and Miss Hartsook, at No. 7050 Oglesby avenue, Chicago, were Mr and Mrs Jno T Orndorff, of this city; Messrs. F D and J B Reese, of Owings' Mills; Mr and Mrs Robert Coxwell, Miss Hetty Coxwell, Mrs Ernest Coxwell and daughter, of De Soto, MO; Miss Mary Prugh, Mr Prugh and nephew, of Dayton, Ohio; Mr Milton G Pfoutz and Mr H M Waybright, of Trotwood, OH   The American Sentinel Saturday, August 5, 1893"

After the fair, they closed up and moved back to Maryland.

Well, this is just for ME.
I've signed up for IGHR in June.

In the past the event was held at Samford; in the last two years it is/has been held at the University of Georgia.
I've been surprised that student slots haven't been gobbled up [except for the DNA course]. A new library system to explore. Lots of choices. Check it out.

My new book at Heritage books!

1889 List of Taxpayers of Frederick County, Maryland
1889 List of Taxpayers of Frederick County, Maryland - Trudie Davis-Long. This transcription was developed from a book bought at a yard sale in Frederick, Maryland. The following was written inside the cover of this volume: “Smith’s Temple of Fancy, Frederick Maryland[;] this book can be duplicated by David H Smith[;] Frederick December, MD[;] 1/88.” The transcriber believes it to be one of the original records held at the Frederick County Courthouse, which were removed when the county deaccessioned a lot of its paper records and deposited them on the sidewalk where some of the papers were picked up by people from the community who saw their value. Transcribed records include: date, name of the person involved, type of record (if tax was not being paid), tax district, values for disbursements, state tax, interest, county tax, and total paid. The transcriber has included verbatim local law information from legislative acts which pertain to the dispersion section of the book and information on the tax rate. There is also statute law relating to the payments for judges, mayors, and other occupations. The transcriber’s remarks are in brackets. An every-name index adds to the value of this work.
